If you want to explore the area a little further, there are some good places for overnight stays (for more information, click here). Otherwise, follow the main road northwest, up a long, steep winding hill – the walls of the ancient crater. Here, you’ll see gregarious grey monkeys frolicking at the road side.

At the top of the hill, turn left along the crater rim road to the two smaller lakes: Danau Buyan 6 [map] (Lake Buyan) and Danau Tamblingan 7 [map] (Lake Tamblingan). These were a single body of water, until a landslide divided them in 1818. Motorboats and water sports are forbidden on these lakes – the natural spring that feeds them provides water for drinking, and the lakes are a rich source of fish, evident by curious wooden, offshore fishing platforms.
